How to generate a melody
- 1
Choose a key and scale
Pick the key and a scale such as major, minor, pentatonic, blues, Dorian or Mixolydian. Set the range to one or two octaves and the tempo in BPM.
- 2
Set the length and rhythm, then generate
Choose 2, 4 or 8 bars and a simple, medium or busy rhythm, then select Generate a new melody until you hear one you like. The piano roll and note names update with each one.

- 3
Play it and download the MIDI
Select Play to hear it, then Download MIDI to open it in a DAW or the MIDI Editor, where you can change notes or pick another instrument.
How the melody generator writes a melody
- It stays in the scale. Every note comes from the key and scale you choose, so nothing sounds wrong.
- It moves mostly by step. Most notes move to a neighboring scale note; after a bigger leap, the next note steps back the other way, as singers and songwriters tend to do.
- It repeats a rhythm. The second two-bar phrase reuses the first one’s rhythm, and an eight-bar melody brings its first two bars back in bars 5 and 6, which makes it easier to remember.
- It lands on chord tones. Each phrase ends on the root, third or fifth, and the last note is always the root, so the melody sounds finished.
It is a rule-based random melody generator, not an AI model: each melody is new, but it follows the rules above. For a complete song with vocals, use the AI song maker.

| Minor pentatonic | Bluesy, cool | Rock riffs, hip hop loops, lo-fi |
| Blues | Gritty | Blues and funk licks |
| Dorian | Minor but hopeful | Funk, jazz, house |
| Mixolydian | Major with an edge | Rock, country, jam bands |
| Harmonic minor | Dramatic, exotic | Classical-style themes, metal, flamenco flavor |
What to do with a generated melody
Use it as a starting point: sing it over a beat, change a few notes until it sounds like yours, or play it on an instrument in a DAW. Add chords that fit with the Chord Progression Generator, edit the notes in the MIDI Editor, or work out the scale of a melody you already have with the Scale Finder. To turn an idea into a finished song with vocals, describe it in the AI song maker.
