How to generate a chord progression

  1. 1

Choose a key, scale and mood

Pick major or minor, the key, and a mood such as Pop, Sad, Jazz or Epic. Turn on seventh chords for a softer, jazzier sound, or 8 chords for a longer loop.

  2. 2

    Generate and listen

Select Generate progression for a new one in the same mood, then Play to hear it with a simple piano and bass. Each chord card shows the chord name, its Roman numeral and its notes.

  3. 3

Download MIDI or make a song

Download a MIDI file with a chords track and a bass track, one chord per bar, ready for any DAW. Or select Make a song to start a track from the progression in the AI Music Generator.

How the chord progression generator builds progressions

Every chord comes from the key you choose. The generator spells the scale with one letter per note, stacks thirds on each degree, and names the result, so B♭ stays B♭ in F major and you never see A♯ instead. Minor-key cadences can use the raised seventh (harmonic minor), which turns v into V for a stronger pull back home.

Chords in C major and A minor
DegreeC majorA minor (natural)
I / iCAm
ii / ii°DmBdim
iii / IIIEmC
IV / ivFDm
V / vGEm (E with the raised seventh)
vi / VIAmF
vii° / VIIBdimG

Chords are voiced around middle C with smooth voice leading: each chord uses the inversion that moves least from the one before, the way a pianist would play it.

Choose Any to draw from every progression in the scale. With 8 chords, four-chord progressions repeat and end on the dominant, so the loop leads back to the start.

Using the chords

Once the chord progression maker gives you a loop you like, take it further:

  • In a DAW: drag the MIDI file in, put the chords on a pad or piano and the bass on a bass sound, then change the rhythm.
  • As sheet music: open the MIDI in MIDI to Sheet Music to print the chords.
  • As a song: select Make a song to open the AI song generator with the key, tempo and chords in the prompt. AI models treat the chords as guidance and may not follow them exactly.
  • For lyrics: write words over the loop, or draft them in the AI Lyrics Generator.
  • To match a song: find its key and tempo with the Key & BPM Finder, then generate chords in that key.

Can I use these progressions in my songs?

Yes. Common chord progressions are shared building blocks of music and are used in countless songs. What makes a song yours is the melody, lyrics, rhythm and arrangement you write over them. The MIDI files you download here are yours to use.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a random chord generator?

Partly. Each time you select Generate progression it picks another progression at random for the chosen mood, so you can keep rolling until one fits, and the chords always stay in your key.

Is the chord progression generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and no limit. Only Make a song, which opens the AI Music Generator, needs an account.

Can I download the chords as MIDI?

Yes. The MIDI file has two tracks, chords and bass, with one chord per bar at the tempo you set.

What is the most common chord progression?

I–V–vi–IV, which is C – G – Am – F in C major, appears in a huge number of pop songs. Pick the Pop mood to start from it.

How do I write a sad chord progression?

Use a minor key, or start a major-key progression on the vi chord. Try the Sad mood: i–VI–III–VII, which is Am – F – C – G in A minor.

What do the Roman numerals mean?

They show each chord’s place in the key: upper case for major chords, lower case for minor, ° for diminished. They let you move a progression to any key; I–V–vi–IV is C – G – Am – F in C and G – D – Em – C in G.

Is this an AI chord progression generator?

The progressions come from music theory rather than an AI model, so every chord fits the key. To turn them into a full track with AI, select Make a song.

Does it make single chords or whole progressions?

Whole progressions: it is a chord progressions generator that builds 4 or 8 chords in your key, with the notes of each chord shown so you can also use it as a simple chord generator.
